Moving House Checklist

To help you plan for a stress free move:

1) De-clutter

Get all the members of your family to put aside things to be given away to your local charity. By giving away items that you no longer need, you reduce the total volume of goods to be packed (reducing the total moving cost), as well as supporting your local community. (6 to 8 weeks prior to moving day)

2) Book a removal survey

The sooner you get removal surveyors in to give you a quote, the earlier you will find out about any potential complications, which will give you more time to make the necessary arrangements to resolve difficulties ahead of your moving day. 3) Arrange for parking outside both properties

Parking can be a complication on moving day! If there is no available/prearranged parking near to the collection or delivery address, it can make loading or unloading difficult. We arrange parking on all moves or can advise on who to contact.(see notice periods on council websites)

4) Confirm booking with removal company

Once you’ve decided you are happy with our removal quote, formally confirm the booking with us. The more notice you give us, more likely we are to have availability on your moving day. (2 to 4 weeks prior to moving day)

5) Set up royal mail redirection service

Although most people remember to change their address with their banks and other main utility providers, it is worth setting up a re-direction service with Royal Mail. (2 weeks before moving day)

6) Book end of tenancy cleaners

If moving from a rental property you will probably want to get the property professionally cleaned, so as to safeguard your deposit. It’s important to book the cleaners to arrive AFTER the movers have completed loading all your effects. (book cleaners 2 weeks prior to moving day)

7) Change/cancel direct debit and standing orders

Notify your bank of any changes to direct debits and standing orders. Remember that cancelling a service does not necessarily stops direct debits and standing orders.

8) Pack important effects separately

There are a few items that you may urgently need during the moving process and the last thing you want is to be looking for it in boxes that have already been packed. Please pack a small suitcase with important effects and valuables (i.e. passports, jewellery). And if you have kids, ensure to pack for them as if they are going away for the weekend. (One day prior to Moving day)

9) Take final meter readings

Take note of the meter readings for gas and electricity on the day of your move and notify the respective utility companies of your departure.
